US WW2 Artillery - part 2

Sherman Calliope rocket launchers - these are Takara Sherman M4A3 hulls with the Calliope turret from CGD.

GDG produce a range of 1/144 vehicles and equipment that are 3D printed. As you can see from the close-ups, the 3D printing makes the surface quite rough, but from any sort of distance (even a foot) it is not noticeable. It makes it slightly tricky to paint and takes more coats than a plastic, resin or metal kit and also the colour comes out differently than if applied to those other surfaces. They have recently changed their material and printing method and I have a few models on order but not sure yet how they paint (from the pictures on their website the effect is less bumpy and seems to be more smooth but with a ridge sort of effect on sloped surfaces). I will do a later post on the new models. I am adding the CDG contact details to my WW2 manufacturers page.

  1. I've tried the 3D printed stuff, but have found them very brittle.

    1. This CDG stuff is made for wargaming and is quite bendy - but a rough surface. Their new material is very bendy - you can see some photos on their website. I have seen 3D printing that is very smooth but I believe that is brittle (and expensive) - depends if you collect or wargame (or both) as to whether the CDG wargame models are suitable.

  2. I can't accept the quality of CDG 3D products...

    1. The original stuff is far too 'bumpy' and have not bought any more, but the new material looks different and so I have bought a few to see (will get in a few weeks)
